What Are Self-Help Groups?

Self-help groups consist of individuals who share the same problem or concern. Members provide emotional support to one another, learn ways to cope, discover strategies for improving their condition, and help others while helping themselves. Research estimated that more than 25 million Americans have been involved in self-help groups at some point during their lives and that groups are effective for a variety of problems. More specifically, positive outcomes have been demonstrated with groups that address substance abuse, bereavement, diabetes, depression and other areas of concern.

Most self-help or support groups are run by the members themselves, although some have leaders, they are generally members who have been involved for some time. A few have professional (generally volunteer) leaders or facilitators.

Usually, self help groups do not charge membership fees, although some ask for donations or require you to purchase books or materials. If a fee is expected, it often is reduced for those unable to pay
